What is SGPA?
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It represents a student’s academic performance during a particular semester. It is usually calculated from the grade points and credit values of the subjects completed during that semester.
SGPA Formula
SGPA Calculation Example
Subject 1:
Grade Point = 9
Credits = 4
Credit Points = 9 × 4 = 36
Subject 2:
Grade Point = 8
Credits = 3
Credit Points = 8 × 3 = 24
Subject 3:
Grade Point = 7
Credits = 3
Credit Points = 7 × 3 = 21
Total Credit Points:
36 + 24 + 21 = 81
Total Credits:
4 + 3 + 3 = 10
SGPA:
81 ÷ 10 = 8.10
Why Are Credits Important?
Subjects may carry different credit values. A subject with more credits contributes more heavily to the SGPA than a subject with fewer credits. Therefore, simply averaging grade points can produce an incorrect result when subject credits are different.
SGPA vs CGPA
SGPA normally represents performance during one semester, while CGPA represents cumulative academic performance across multiple semesters.
SGPA vs GPA
The meaning of GPA and SGPA varies between institutions. SGPA specifically refers to a semester grade point average, while GPA may refer to a semester, term or another academic period depending on the educational system.
Can SGPA Be Converted to Percentage?
There is no universal SGPA-to-percentage conversion formula. Universities and educational institutions may use different conversion methods. Use your institution’s official formula when an official percentage is required.
Important: This calculator provides a general credit-weighted SGPA calculation. Universities may use different grading scales, credit rules, rounding methods, failed-subject policies, audit-course rules and SGPA formulas. Always follow your institution’s official academic regulations for official results.
