What is an Average Marks Calculator?

An Average Marks Calculator finds the arithmetic mean of marks obtained across multiple subjects, tests or exams. It is useful for quickly understanding a student’s typical score across several assessments.

Average Marks Formula

Average Marks = Total Marks Obtained ÷ Number of Subjects or Exams

Average Marks Example

Suppose a student scores:

English = 75
Mathematics = 82
Science = 68
Social Science = 90
Computer = 85

Total:
75 + 82 + 68 + 90 + 85
= 400 marks

Number of subjects:
5

Average Marks:
400 ÷ 5
= 80 marks

Average Marks vs Total Marks

Total marks are the sum of all scores. Average marks show the typical score per subject or exam. For example, a total of 400 marks across five subjects produces an average of 80 marks per subject.

Average Marks vs Percentage

When every subject has the same maximum marks, the average marks can be converted directly into an average percentage. For example, an average of 80 marks out of 100 equals 80%.

Why Use the Same Maximum Marks?

This calculator is designed for averaging comparable scores, such as five subjects each worth 100 marks. If different subjects have different maximum marks, use a weighted overall percentage or the Subject-wise Marks Calculator instead of treating the raw marks as directly comparable.

Important: The grade shown by this calculator uses a general scale: A+ from 90%, A from 80%, B+ from 70%, B from 60%, C from 50%, D from 40%, and F below 40%. Actual grading systems may differ by school, board, college or university.
