What is ROI?
ROI stands for Return on Investment. It is a simple measure used to compare the gain or loss from an investment with the amount originally invested.
ROI Formula
Final Investment Value − Initial Investment
ROI
(Net Profit or Loss ÷ Initial Investment) × 100
ROI Example
Final Value: ₹1,50,000
Net Profit:
₹1,50,000 − ₹1,00,000
= ₹50,000
ROI:
₹50,000 ÷ ₹1,00,000 × 100
= 50%
What Does a Positive ROI Mean?
A positive ROI means the final value is higher than the initial investment. For example, a 50% ROI means the gain equals 50% of the original investment amount.
What Does a Negative ROI Mean?
A negative ROI indicates an investment loss. For example, if ₹1,00,000 becomes ₹80,000, the investment has lost ₹20,000 and the ROI is -20%.
What is Annualized ROI?
Total ROI does not account for how long an investment was held. This calculator therefore also shows an annualized compound return when the initial and final values are positive.
[(Final Value ÷ Initial Investment)1 ÷ Years − 1] × 100
Total ROI = 50%
Annualized compound return is approximately:
14.47% per year
ROI vs Profit
Profit is an amount of money, while ROI expresses the gain or loss as a percentage of the original investment. Two investments can therefore produce the same profit amount but have very different ROI percentages if their initial costs are different.
What is Investment Multiple?
Investment multiple compares the final value with the initial investment. A value of 1.00× means the investment is at break-even, 1.50× means the final value is 1.5 times the initial investment, and 0.80× means only 80% of the original investment value remains.
