What is a Percentage?

A percentage represents a number as a fraction of 100. The symbol % means “per hundred.” For example, 25% means 25 out of every 100, or 0.25 in decimal form.

How to Calculate a Percentage of a Number

Percentage Value

Percentage ÷ 100 × Number
Example:

What is 20% of 500?

20 ÷ 100 × 500
= 0.20 × 500
= 100

How to Find What Percentage One Number is of Another

Percentage

Part ÷ Total × 100
If 40 students out of 200 students passed:

40 ÷ 200 × 100
= 20%

Percentage Increase Formula

Increase Amount

Original Value × Percentage ÷ 100

New Value

Original Value + Increase Amount
Increase ₹1,000 by 20%:

Increase = ₹1,000 × 20%
= ₹200

New Value = ₹1,000 + ₹200
= ₹1,200

Percentage Decrease Formula

Decrease Amount

Original Value × Percentage ÷ 100

New Value

Original Value − Decrease Amount

Percentage Change Formula

Percentage Change

(New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value × 100
Suppose a value increases from 500 to 600:

Change = 600 − 500
= 100

Percentage Change:
100 ÷ 500 × 100
= 20% increase

How to Find the Original Value

If you know a final value after a percentage increase, you can work backwards to calculate the original value.

Original Value After an Increase

Final Value ÷ (1 + Percentage ÷ 100)
If a value becomes 1,200 after a 20% increase:

Original Value
= 1,200 ÷ 1.20
= 1,000
