Course-Wise GPA Breakdown
Quality points are calculated by multiplying the grade point of each course by its credit hours.
| Course | Grade | Grade Point | Credits | Quality Points |

What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a numerical measure used to summarize academic performance across several courses. A GPA calculator converts course grades into grade points and weights them according to the number of credits assigned to each course.
GPA Formula
Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
where:
Quality Points = Grade Point × Credit Hours
GPA Calculation Example
Course 1: A = 4.0 × 3 credits = 12.0 quality points
Course 2: B+ = 3.3 × 4 credits = 13.2 quality points
Course 3: B = 3.0 × 3 credits = 9.0 quality points
Total Quality Points:
12 + 13.2 + 9
= 34.2
Total Credits:
3 + 4 + 3
= 10
GPA:
34.2 ÷ 10
= 3.42 GPA
Why Credit Hours Matter
GPA is normally credit-weighted. A course worth four credits has a greater effect on GPA than a course worth one credit. Therefore, simply averaging letter-grade points may give an incorrect result when courses have different credit values.
GPA vs Percentage
GPA and percentage are different academic measurement systems. A percentage represents marks obtained out of the total possible marks, while GPA represents academic performance on a grade-point scale. There is no universal formula that accurately converts every percentage into GPA.
GPA vs CGPA
GPA often describes performance for a particular semester or set of courses. CGPA generally represents cumulative performance across multiple semesters or academic periods. The exact terminology depends on the institution.
Important: GPA policies vary significantly between schools, colleges and universities. Some institutions use 4.0, 4.3, 5.0, 10-point or other scales and may treat plus/minus grades differently. Always use your institution’s official grading policy for official academic calculations.
