What is a Debt Payoff Calculator?

A debt payoff calculator estimates how long it may take to repay an outstanding debt based on its current balance, interest rate and monthly payment. It can also demonstrate the effect of making additional payments.

Debt Payoff Calculation

Each month:

Monthly Interest
Current Balance × Annual Interest Rate ÷ 12

Principal Repaid
Monthly Payment − Monthly Interest

New Balance
Current Balance − Principal Repaid

Why Extra Payments Can Help

When an extra payment reduces principal earlier, the next month’s interest is generally calculated on a smaller balance. Under the assumptions used by this calculator, this can reduce both the repayment period and total interest paid.

Debt Payoff Example

Suppose your outstanding debt is:

Debt Balance: ₹5,00,000
Annual Interest Rate: 12%
Regular Monthly Payment: ₹15,000
Extra Monthly Payment: ₹5,000

Your payment with the extra amount becomes:
₹20,000 per month

The calculator then simulates the outstanding balance month by month until the debt reaches zero and compares the result with paying only ₹15,000 per month.

Minimum Payment Warning

For a debt to decline, the monthly payment generally needs to be greater than the interest accruing on the balance. If the payment is too small to cover the calculated monthly interest, this calculator will show a warning instead of producing a misleading payoff period.

Debt Payoff vs Loan EMI Calculator

A loan EMI calculator typically determines the payment needed for a specified loan amount, interest rate and tenure. This Debt Payoff Calculator works in the opposite direction: you enter an existing balance and the amount you intend to pay, and it estimates how long repayment may take.

Disclaimer: This calculator provides an estimate for educational and financial-planning purposes. It assumes a constant interest rate, monthly interest calculation and payments applied as modeled. Actual lenders may calculate interest differently or apply fees, penalties, minimum-payment rules, daily interest, prepayment charges, changing rates or different payment allocation methods. Check your lender’s actual terms before making financial decisions.
