What is an Inflation Calculator?

An Inflation Calculator estimates how the price of goods, services or financial goals may change over time because of inflation. It also helps illustrate how inflation can reduce the purchasing power of money.

How Does Inflation Affect Future Costs?

When prices rise over time, the same amount of money generally buys fewer goods and services. For example, an expense that costs ₹1,00,000 today may require considerably more money in the future if inflation continues for many years.

Future Cost Formula

Future Cost = Present Cost × (1 + Inflation Rate)Number of Years

Increase Due to Inflation

Future Cost − Present Cost

Purchasing Power Formula

Future Purchasing Power = Present Amount ÷ (1 + Inflation Rate)Number of Years

This shows how much purchasing power the same nominal amount may represent after inflation.

Inflation Calculation Example

Current Cost: ₹1,00,000
Average Inflation Rate: 6% per year
Time Period: 10 years

Estimated Future Cost: approximately ₹1.79 lakh
Increase Due to Inflation: approximately ₹79,000

This means an item or expense costing around ₹1 lakh today could require roughly ₹1.79 lakh after 10 years if prices increase consistently by 6% every year.

Why Inflation Compounds

Inflation generally has a compounding effect. If prices rise by 6% in one year, the next year’s increase is calculated on the already higher price rather than the original price. This is why the long-term effect of inflation can be much larger than simply multiplying the annual rate by the number of years.

Inflation and Financial Planning

Inflation is particularly important when planning for long-term goals such as retirement, education, healthcare, housing and major purchases. A financial goal based only on today’s prices may underestimate the amount required many years in the future.
