What is a Discount?
A discount is a reduction from the original price of a product or service. Discounts are commonly expressed as a percentage of the original price.
Discount Formula
Original Price × Discount Percentage ÷ 100
Final Price
Original Price − Discount Amount
Discount Calculation Example
Discount: 20%
Discount Amount:
₹2,000 × 20 ÷ 100
= ₹400
Final Price:
₹2,000 − ₹400
= ₹1,600
You save ₹400 and pay 80% of the original price.
How to Calculate Discount Percentage
If you know the original price and the discounted sale price, you can calculate the discount percentage by first finding the difference between the two prices.
Original Price − Sale Price
Discount Percentage
Amount Saved ÷ Original Price × 100
Sale Price: ₹1,600
Savings:
₹2,000 − ₹1,600 = ₹400
Discount:
₹400 ÷ ₹2,000 × 100 = 20%
Multiple Item Discount
When identical items receive the same percentage discount, the calculator multiplies the original price, discounted price and savings by the quantity entered.
Discount vs Final Price
The discount amount is the money removed from the original price. The final price is the amount that remains after the discount has been applied. For example, a 25% discount means the customer normally pays 75% of the original price before any applicable taxes or additional charges.
