What is an Exam Marks Calculator?
An Exam Marks Calculator helps students calculate their exam percentage, grade and result from marks obtained. For objective exams, it can also calculate a final score using correct answers, incorrect answers and negative marking.
Exam Percentage Formula
Exam Marks Example
Marks obtained = 78
Maximum marks = 100
Percentage:
(78 ÷ 100) × 100
= 78%
Using this calculator’s default grade scale:
78% = Grade B+
Negative Marking Formula
Negative Marking Example
Correct answers = 75
Incorrect answers = 20
Marks per correct answer = 1
Negative marks per incorrect answer = 0.25
Positive marks:
75 × 1 = 75
Negative marks:
20 × 0.25 = 5
Final score:
75 − 5 = 70 marks
How Are Passing Marks Calculated?
The calculator multiplies the maximum exam marks by the selected passing percentage. For example, if an exam is worth 100 marks and the passing percentage is 33%, the passing score is 33 marks.
Marks Needed for the Next Grade
The calculator identifies the next percentage threshold above your current grade and calculates how many additional marks would have been needed to reach that level.
Important: Grade boundaries, passing rules, grace marks, negative marking and rounding policies differ between schools, universities, competitive examinations and recruitment tests. Use the official rules of your examination for an official result.
