What is a Profit Calculator?

A Profit Calculator helps estimate how much money remains after the costs associated with selling a product or service are subtracted from sales revenue. It can also calculate useful business measures such as profit margin and markup.

Profit Formula

Total Revenue

Selling Price × Quantity Sold

Product Cost

Cost Price × Quantity Sold

Gross Profit

Total Revenue − Product Cost

Net Profit

Total Revenue − Product Cost − Additional Expenses

Profit Margin Formula

Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Total Revenue × 100

Profit margin shows what percentage of sales revenue remains as estimated profit after the costs included in the calculator.

Markup Formula

Markup = (Selling Price − Cost Price) ÷ Cost Price × 100

Margin and markup are not the same. Margin compares profit with selling revenue, while markup compares the price difference with the cost price.

Profit Calculation Example

Selling Price: ₹1,000 per unit
Cost Price: ₹600 per unit
Quantity Sold: 100 units
Additional Expenses: ₹5,000

Total Revenue: ₹1,00,000
Product Cost: ₹60,000
Gross Profit: ₹40,000
Net Profit: ₹35,000
Net Profit Margin: 35%

Profit vs Revenue

Revenue is the total amount generated from sales before costs are deducted. Profit is what remains after the relevant costs and expenses have been subtracted. A business can therefore have high revenue but relatively low profit if its costs are also high.

What is Break-Even Selling Price?

The break-even selling price is the estimated price per unit required to recover the product costs and additional expenses at the entered sales quantity. Selling above this amount generally produces a profit under the assumptions entered, while selling below it produces a loss.
